David Stanford N.D.D .M.A. .R.C.A.

Studied Painting and Art History at that Mecca of art study, Walthamstow School of Art, alongside such people as Peter Greenaway, Vivian Stanshall and Ian Drury. From there he went on to the Royal College of Art and after graduating he established his own photographic studio, first in Chelsea then in London’s West End.

In David's early career he photographed  a number of famous bands as well as Elton John and Eric Clapton for publicity and iconic album sleeves. Steadfastly refusing to take the accepted route and specialize his career expanded until he was photographing everything from fashion to war.

He has travelled all over the World shooting a wide range of high-profile UK and International advertising campaigns as well as fashion spreads for some of the most prestigious magazines in London and Paris. It was not only the still but the moving image that attracted his painters eye so he also directed a number of TV commercials and film documentaries working with such legendary features cameramen as Norman Warwick and Frank Tidy. He immediately embraced digital photography when it arrived on the scene and said a final farewell to film forever while on a shoot in Ethiopia in the year 2000….he seldom uses traditional film now. Having had such an early introduction to digital photography he became, by default, something of an expert in the use of Photoshop and its potential for taking images to yet another level and he  has used it from its first beta program right up to the latest incarnations. However, he is emphatic that it is simply another tool in the picture makers armoury. A tool that one needs to get really familiar with  so as not to abuse its impressive array of imaging possibilities. Recently returning to painting, David still travels extensively on his personal, eclectic, photographic adventures in such diverse places as Bolivia, India and China and has produced a number of widely acclaimed photographic books such as Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex Churches …”Angkor” in Cambodia, which comes out in spring 2009. Others still in production include English Follies and the extraordinary  “ Pere La chaise”  necropolis in Paris. His last forage for material was  to Laos and Vietnam earlier this year coming back, as always, with a wide range of imagery that will be consolidated into another book, an exhibition and further additions to his already vast photo library.
